To me, the underlying issue is that Netanyahu has become the face for world jewry. I see a proactive approach in messaging. There needs to be more organizations such as Stand with Us that. for example. posted on Facebook a video of an Israeli policeman comforting a Muslim woman and child during an air raid siren. Or more social media posts of how Israeli Arabs can become educated in Israeli society. While anti-Semitism can never be rationalized, thinking outside of the box we've been accustomed to thinking in for decades is needed.
I think many of the sentiments shared in this piece are correct, but something I fear the American Jewish community, of which I am a part of, is failing to grasp is that as we continue to claim and hold Israel as an important identity and part of who we are, as inherently Jewish and as essential and core to our beings - as many hold their zionists beliefs - then it makes American Jews overall less safe because if we say over and over again "Israel is Jewish! Zionism is Judaism! A verbal attack or protest on Israel is an attack on Jews!", disgusting bigot's will take that and run and follow that argument to its logical conclusions and then harm JEWS for the actions of ISRAEL because we keep emphasizing the connection and inherently tied nature of both. It is a really hard and sad reality to navigate, but I think this path will only lead to more violence and we must find a way to disentangle to two or at least change narratives because very unfortunately and heartbreakingly, this will continue to happen.
It is not a coincidence that antisemitism has risen in response since Israel's response in Gaza. We have a hand in doing this to ourselves. The violence in the diaspora against Jews is disgusting and terrifying, and it also requires us to take a step back and see if there is anything we can do differently and teach differently to ourselves and the world.
Attacking a school is evil. Choosing that school because the children are Jews is a particular kind of evil.
Jewish Americans have been increasing targeted. It’s horrible and a threat that everyone should be conscious of when we speak so we aren’t contributing more to it.
I hesitate to write more given that.
Americans are always looking for why someone does something terrible. We do it after every mass shooting. Every potential terrorist attack. It’s part of every real crime show or crime drama.
Sometimes this is only interest and passive consumption. But sometimes a better understanding helps us mitigate future violence. Sometimes humanizing the perpetrator helps us recognize that in certain situations and environments maybe we would be the evil one. Sometimes it helps us see that some aspect of society or culture or subculture encourages violence.
The journalists and commentators engaging in this reporting and analysis in good faith will sometimes make mistakes. They might be insensitive. But Americans need to think about potential dominos of our policy choices whether it is cutting school funding to poor children or waging/supporting war in the Middle East.
Unfortunately this is the face of the Democratic Party right now.
